Today I started to play Rhapsody in Blue on the piano. I got about 10 pages in, then stopped disappointed in myself. I tried a Beethoven concerto, which used to be EASY. Same outcome. Finally, I got out a Bach Invention Book and stumbled over stuff I played in jr. high.
I have really been on a music drought since moving here. I just don't seem to want to sit at my piano, unpack my keyboard, pick up a guitar, uke, harmonica or bongo drum. Nothing. Part of it is that the best time for me to do that would be when Kate is asleep. One problem...she's asleep. shhh. Part of it is that I don't see a fun result for my playing. Does that make sense? Nothing to learn a new song for, no students to teach, no band to play with, no one needing a song arranged. (Don't say I should start teaching. It wouldn't be fair to my girls right now. Trust me.)
Instead, I've spent time doing other things. Cooking has been a huge time commitment as of late. Fixing up the house another. Blogging yet another. I can quietly write while she's asleep and it is therapeutic as well. But I just don't know what to do about music. Now when I sit to play, I just get frustrated and stop. The joy is not there.
Help! Drought big time.
JULIE & JULIA!
-At home in the kitchen with Erin and Si.
From our gourmet tables to yours-
My son Spencer was with Si today in Bountiful. She sent me a picture of her son Stephen and Spence looking so handsome and playing with their little lab puppy Jack. It made me miss him and that kitchen so badly. Man I wish I could just hug him sometimes.
We had 3 missionary farewells in our ward today. This ward has 21? boys/girls out on missions right now. Super inspiring talks from great boys. One quote that was particularly memorable for me from cute Mike Gooch (who was so good to Spence when we first moved here. Classy kid.):
"well...someday came suddenly." EXACTLY.
Oh sorry! So I made the first roll recipe of my great roll bake off. I had to do it twice. Si, listen. I followed every single thing the recipe said and my rolls looked nothing like these rolls. Seriously, some came unfolded, or looked uneven or too puffy, not rich brown even though I dipped it in butter. They were fine to eat for my family and tasted really good, but I wouldn't want to bring them to be judged by anyone. I purposely made rolls, because I have this problem a lot. I can't seem to make the perfect, mouthwatering, soft, beautifully colored roll.
Also, it took me all stinking day. I had to come home during Sunday School to stick them in the oven. I'll keep trying. Maybe tomorrow I'll do the buttermilk ones. I hope it is better! I might not make it to 3 recipes.

i love that you did it twice.
Rolls take a while to get...after you make them for a while you get the "feel" of how they should be when you place them in the pan. Try stretching the roll a bit before folding. Rolls=love. I know you can do it. :) ps- they don;t turn brown bc of the butter, the butter is suppose to be inside the roll... Next time we are together, we are making ROLLS.
Also, when the word gets out about your AMAZING musical talents, you'll be booked, just like you were here.
veri word: psycher.
Please make test rolls for me when I come visit. They don't even have to be brown.
Of course you use Si's photos. All along I thought you were taking your own pictures and I thought, "WOW! She's fabulous!!! I wish I could be everything Erin Blake is" Now, don't get me wrong, you ARE fabulous, but I am happy to hear that you are normal and that not every talent in the whole world comes perfectly natural to you. I adore you! (And still wish I could be everything that you are even if your rolls aren't quite Si's)
Ha ha Lauren. How well do you know me? How many meals have you eaten at my house? Did any of them look like these pictures?
I like to always be learning or getting better at something. Right now, it is cooking. I am having so many guests (hint hint) that I want to get more used to cooking different stuff, better stuff. In the meantime, while I am learning, I am using Si's pictures!
