Stuff I would like to know..

There is a word which I saw twice today. In fact, the last two books I have read have used this word several times. I have seen it before and just skipped over it, because I didn't know what it meant. I think it has something to do with ancient books? It bothered me that such a short word was unfamiliar to me. Who else does not know what the word is?

The word...... TOME.

This leads me to a segment that I like to call....

GRAMMAR NAZI!!!!

How do you know when to use the word "which" and when to use "that"? Look at the first sentence of this post. Should I have said "that" instead?

"There is a word which.... or There is a word that..."

I purposely used the word which, because I felt it was incorrect and it felt weird to use it. I want to see who agrees with me. I have a hunch what the correct answer is, but I won't look it up yet.

I'm going to give you something to do, if you'd like. Comment the answer "that" or "which" you believe is correct and you can support it with factual back up if you'd like. It will be a fun exchange. Hey! Yes it will. e

p.s. oh, and get back to me what TOME means. I purposely won't look that up either. Why does this make me so happy?

You are one sick, sick girl. That or which? This is a trick q, right? I'm guessing Which. If I wanted to cheat, I'd call KD. Who, btw, got every word right today at the MPJ Spelling Bee. Oh, and not to boast or anything, but my son placed 4th. Whooda thunk?
I love the grammar Nazi. You should give away prizes. Like copies of "Grammar for Dummies" . I NEED to get me a copy of that. When we was at the bookstore the other day, I almost bought me a copy! love you.

Who is your fellow grammar nazi? Your older brother, that's who! I agree with your grammar posts. I side with both that and which. Grammar belongs to the people, I read in a grammar book once. Ultimately, the usage changes and while linguists and English PhDs argue and moan, the language moves ever one. It is a living, vibrant thing. So, both can be correct. Hey look! I've just made an argument for Eubonics!

Tome, by my understanding, also not looking it up, means book. Specifically I understand it as a large book, possibly containing exhaustive knowledge on a given subject. But I could be wrong....

Ran into the word 'tome' twice this week after reading your post. I do not re-call ever seeing it before. Interesting. Thanks for expanding my horizons.

Soccerstud12, soccerstud12...who in the world would that be? hmm.
Seriously, that always happens to me. I learn a new word for the first time, then see it multiple times within a few weeks.
